DIY Olympics & Team USA Swim Caps
The 2024 Summer Olympics started on Friday, July 26th in Paris and conclude on Sunday, August 11.
It has been hotter than dog’s breath where we live this summer and to escape the heat we have been living at the local pool. Since we swim all the time, my girls have become quite the accomplished swimmers. They haven’t joined a swim team yet but they’ve been battling it out in across-the-pool races against each other.
Because of all this swimming we are naturally very interested in the swimming games when the Summer Olympics start this weekend. To kick off the Olympic festivities in our house (dedicated TV time) we decided to make our own Team USA Olympics-inspired swim caps for fun to see if they might give us a competitive edge in the pool.
You can make some too. They are really easy and fun! All you need are some inexpensive white swim caps (we bought these fabric ones but the lycra ones would work really well too) and some permanent markers.
We stuffed some paper towel inside the caps (not shown, we figured that out after these pictures were taken) to make sure the ink doesn’t run through. Then we got to work creating our own Olympics designs. We drew Olympic rings, American flags and of course some waves and splashes to symbolize very fast swimming!
It was actually quite fun and my girls swear they swim faster in their festive swim caps. Well, one of them does. The other one thinks swimming caps look like she’s wearing underwear on her head. I say it was a fun, easy craft and a great way to get in the spirit of the Olympics!
Here are two tutorials from our archives on how to make Olympic medals. One of them includes a cookie surprise:
