DIY Kitchen Garden Gift for Mom
Not all moms love to cook. In fact, many of them would rather order take-out and they are probably hoping for a spa treatment gift certificate for Mother’s Day. If you happen to be lucky enough to have a mother in your life who loves to read cookbooks, who loves to scour the farmer’s market for the freshest ingredients and can’t wait to try out new and exotic recipes, then this little kitchen garden might be just the perfect gift to give to her! (From the Editor: you don’t need to be a cook or foodie to appreciate a kitchen garden.)
The secret is the recycled cans. Some tin cans are too pretty to throw away. I’m not a foodie but I aspire to be one and I’ve been collecting pretty cans for a few months now. The ones that have printing on the actual tin are the best because they can hold up to watering and they have great design (I might be partial, being a graphic designer but that’s what I think.)
The next secret is the plants. Succulents are perfect because they are easy to grow and they don’t require a lot of watering–which means you don’t have to worry about drainage. In fact, you can plant succulents in just about anything and they’ll thrive. Just don’t overwater them.
If you want to plant something else in your pretty cans, like say some herbs that would be perfect for a kitchen window, you’ll have to know a little more about gardening. Lighting conditions and drainage are important but don’t let that stop you. All you would need to do is hammer some holes into the bottom of the can, maybe put some rocks in before you add dirt and add a little clay saucer underneath!
How could you resist a present as cute as this?! Happy Mother’s Day!
