Ghost of Pregnancy Cravings Past (& Present)

When I hit the “Save” button on last week’s column, I had a brief OH CRAP moment where I wondered if the reaction would be total dead silence. Crickets. Maybe a couple comments saying that no, they never experienced post-pregnancy food aversions, punctuated with a gentle-yet-patronizing LOL. The unmistakable sense of a post going over like a big fat lead balloon.

I should have known better. By the time I timidly checked the published post, comments were already well into the double-digits. Hummus! Turkey meatballs! Scrambled eggs! I don’t think there was a level of the food pyramid that someone didn’t admit to a lingering grudge against.
So this week, I am kind of curious if we can have a repeat performance of mass commiseration, or if THIS is the week I’ll be left awkwardly shuffling stage right because I’m the only weirdo in the room.

Do you have any pregnancy cravings that still linger in a deliciously inappropriate way? Or did, for any extended postpartum period of time?

Pregnancy Cravings That Outlasted My Pregnancy

During my first pregnancy, I developed an absolutely inappropriate fixation on chocolate pudding. I was insane for chocolate pudding. I bought Kozy Shack pudding cups by the cartload and ate at least one a day for a good six months. If I was alone in the house for a few hours I was pretty much powerless to resist polishing off two or three cups, one right after another. But whatever! A simple pregnancy indulgence, right? Almost textbook, really, except for the dipping pickles in it part. I was never particularly passionate about pudding pre-pregnancy so I’m sure I won’t even THINK about chocolate pudding once the baby is here.

And then Noah was born, and Jason came home from our weekend farmer’s market with a GIANT ASS TUB of homemade chocolate pudding from a local dairy. He bought it mostly as a gag, and even joked with the vendor that they signed onto the market about 10 months too late: he would have probably paid for their oldest child’s college tuition just in pudding alone.

Oh! How we laughed. Until I opened the plastic tub and took a taste. And then another taste. And then an hour later the entire vat of pudding was GONE.

To this day, chocolate pudding is a weakness that I no longer even pretend to understand. It’s like comfort food gone haywire — the one consistently delicious food in a pregnancy full of nausea and aversions. It’s the one snack I CANNOT keep in the house, and it’s the one dessert that I simply MUST order if I see any variation of it — chocolate mousse, pot du creme, creme brulee — on a restaurant menu.

My second pregnancy was even weirder, and I won’t go into quite as much rapturous detail because…well, it’s a really gross combo/follow-up to chocolate pudding…but I very literally ate an elephant’s weight in vegetarian burritos with extra black beans and hot salsa from Chipotle when I was pregnant. I would have eaten that every single day if it hadn’t been for OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS begging to eat something — anything — other than Chipotle for the fourth day in a row. And it was STILL one of the first meals I requested once I got home from the hospital. This past weekend marked the first time since Ezra’s birth that someone else suggested Chipotle for lunch and I actually turned it down because — HOLD THE PHONE — I was tired of it. It’s taken almost 19 months, but I think I’ve gotten the Chipotle craving out of my system. I think.

(Not so much with the black olives, though. Eaten right out of the can with a spoon. Jason caught me doing this again a few weeks ago and demanded that I take a pregnancy test immediately.)

(I wasn’t pregnant. I was just hungry.)

    Yes…and it is a weird one:chocolate and oats Fibre One bars. (in my defense I had gestational diabetes and these were my “treats”.) I still eat 5-7 a week!

    ICEES!!!!! The real kind, not alligator ice or slushies, but icees. I didn’t get hit with this craving until after my son was born and 7 months later I still want them. I even craved (and had) right smack in the middle of a dreadfully cold midwestern winter. Oh, and Baja Blast from Taco Bell.

    Oh God, yes – MILK. I mean, I always liked milk, but when I was pregnant, it was all my husband could do to keep it in the house. We would go through about a half gallon everyday and that was when I was trying to control my cravings and not drink an entire jug in one sitting. I think my husband was honestly worried he was becoming “that guy who buys milk” at the CVS across the street from our apartment. Three months post-partum and the craving is still going strong. Maybe I’m drinking a little less, like a half gallon every two days, but yeah…

    Rice Krispie treats. There was one day when I could keep NOTHING down except for the treats which my mom had included in a care package. They were supposed to be for my husband who loves them while I’m usually fairly indifferent towards them (pretty much everything else in the package was for me since he doesn’t like chocolate).
    Anyway, I ate the entire container of them that day. Not all at once; they were spaced out about one every half hour but I was just so thrilled to be able to eat something and have it stay down and they tasted so fantastically wonderful as well.
    I ate them every chance I got the rest of the pregnancy and now, almost 10 months postpartum, I still crave them. Bless my mom for mailing them to me throughout the pregnancy when I was way to sick to even think about trying to make them for myself!
    My husband still misses the woman who used to leave the batch for him. hehehe.

    i still have a slight aversion to homemade stir fry (baby is 6 mo. now) and i am still totally obsessed with and craving chocolate soymilk. i drink at least a gallon a week. 🙂

    Chocolate, sweets and bacon (but not all together, ew). I hated chocolate and sweet stuff before the pregnancy. And ABHORRED bacon… like gross, ew, can’t even smell it.
    Yeah, until I got knocked up. Then it was like, OMG OMG OMG, must have more chocolate. And candy. And what is this amazing thing BACON… I was like the damn dog on the beggin’ strips commercial.
    And strangely enough, it never went away. I don’t pound bacon and chocolate quite the same way, but I still love to eat it.
    And my hubby is SO happy about that, because when I eat it, he gets to eat it too!

    I didnt have any strange cravings during pregnancy. But I do now. When my period is about to start I crave pickles. And lots of them.

    When I was pregnant last summer I developed a serious donut addiction. I mean, of course donuts are awesome, but ever since my pregnancy they are like sweet delicious angels from above that I can’t eat enough of.
    They’re taunting me.

    Oh, Rice Krispie treats, totally. Even the pre-packaged ones. YUM! A year on, and the club packs still don’t stay long in the house, and heaven forbid hubby makes a home-made batch!
    But also lingering is the craving for little debbie nutty bars. those and apples with peanut butter kept me going for weeks…
    mmm… grilled cheese… my baby had to battle me for her grilled cheese in restaurants. Hey, gotta make sure its not too hot, right?

    ketchup. i really disliked ketchup prior to having my son, prefering BBQ sauce as my dip of choice. but once i got pregnant, oooh boy, i loved me some ketchup and still do. seeing that we have a 2 year old who also loves it, i am happy to say that we are well stocked.
    oh and, two-bite brownies from whole foods. but i can’t even have them in the house now because i have no control over their perfect chocolately deliciousness. interestingly enough, i had more willpower over them when i was pregnant than i do now, rationing myself to 4 at a time (they’re small).

    I’m 33 weeks with my first; is it bizarre that I’m wonderfully thankful that the rapturous delight of some foods won’t stop? The foods that I crave are the same ones that I’ve always eaten but they taste SO GOOD. Fruit is so juicy & sweet, and rabbit-pellet ice is so cold and delightfully crunchy, and TCBY, well that’s always a good thing.

    Milk and cookies n cream ice cream (I used to be vegan and since then only drank soy or almond milk and I was always more of a fan of soft serve). I was never into either until I got pregnant and would throw temper tantrums if we were out of either while pregnant. I don’t NEED them quite like before, but I do love them both now.

    I also wasn’t a big fan of sweets before my pregnancy and not really too into them WHILE pregnant – actually would do crazy shit like eat a half of a watermelon in one sitting while pregnant. But post baby? Cookie madness. Cake insanity. And Toll House chocolate chips. Like for baking. Right out of the bag. Lots of bags.
    I blame my mom who started buying entire CAKES for me when I had just had my baby, didn’t have much of an appetite and had my one week of the baby blues and cried every night. She was convinced I had PPD (I didn’t, I don’t think) and compensated with cake. Thanks, mom!

    Toward the end of my pregnancy, I craved coca cola. I still crave it. I didn’t drink it before but now I can’t go a day without it….

    Peanut butter. I mean, I’ve always been a big fan of natural peanut butter (my mom was a typical suburban housewife in most ways but she did insist on natural peanut butter) but when I was pregnant, if I didn’t have bread or an apple or crackers to spread peanut butter on… I’d just eat spoonfuls out of the jar. I figured that since I had a pretty big aversion to meat that my body was craving protein. But lo, these 14 months later— mmm still loooove peanut butter!!! I have a PB&Jelly or PB&Banana sandwich 2-3 days a week for lunch or snack. Sometimes on my English muffin in the morning. About once a month I even suggest making peanut noodles for dinner just so I can eat twice in a day. Tee hee!!!! *blush*

    Definitely MILK!!!!! Same as the other girl that had the milk craving. I’ve always liked it, then got pregnant and REALLY REALLY REALLY GOTTA HAVE IT liked it. Now 7 months postpartum I still drink WAY WAY more than I did pre-pregnancy(not quite as much as I did when I was pregnant, but still a ton of it!!)

    Yes! The strangest thing was that I detested green beans with every fiber of my being. And then when I was pregnant I could eat gigantic bowls of them. I still can, 9 months later. So strange.

    Sweets. Mostly of the chocolate or glazed doughnut variety. Or ice cream. I’ve never had much of a sweet tooth, but now just one look at a doughnut through a shop window, and it’s all I can think about for a week straight. I’m sure breastfeeding has something to do with it, but it lingered even after I’d weaned my first child. Of course, that could be because I was already pregnant again, and it had just morphed into a pregnancy craving. I do hope it goes away after I wean this one. I’m trying to get back in shape, and the merciless cravings are making that really, really hard.

    Anything sweet, but mostly chocolate. Which I was allergic to before I got pregnant. The allergy disappeared while I was pregnant and I couldn’t get enough of it. It’s still (unfortunately) strong. Also, Mexican food. I couldn’t stand the smell of coffee in the grocery store when I was pregnant.

    Sour gummy worms. Before pregnancy, I detested gummy bears/worms or any other gummy creature….but with pregnancy brought out an insane craving for that sour/sweet sugary substance that the gummy worms are covered in. My daughter is almost 1 and although I am not as tempted by them now, I do linger a bit by the bulk food section of our market, debating whether that sour gummy worm would taste as delicious as it did during gestation.

    I had to have chocolate pudding too! I would buy the boxed pudding mix and hide it in the back of the pantry. When hubby would go to work I would cook it and refrigerate it until it was hard enough to eat then I would polish off two or three cups at a time. I also loved vegan bean burritos with hot sauce…lots of hot sauce. The cravings continued after baby was born but only got more intense…I’d crave bone broth then salads with dill pickles, jalapeño, black olives, and blue cheese. Then I’d want buffalo sauce mixed with ranch dressing on everything. Chocolate chips were a weakness too. I’d put them on oatmeal, cake, pudding, and just eat a handful out of the freezer. Then the next week I craved white rice with blue cheese dressing and siracha with a fried egg on the side…I’d eat that twice a day for weeks. I felt powerless and out of control. The more I exercised or the less sleep I got the crazier the craving.

    I loved avocado since I first tasted it. I had it occasionally when I was pregnant – guacamole, on sandwiches, in salads. A few weeks after having my baby, I made guac. All was going well, then it hit me, I was about to puke. I couldn’t take another bite. It tasted normal, like always, but there was something in me that was totally repulsed. Now, I can’t even think of it without gagging. It’s been a year!!! I miss avocado!
