Mermaid Party Hat Craft!

By Brenda Ponnay

This is an installment of our Mermaid Party series.  Here are the party hats we made and instructions on how to do it yourself if you’re throwing your own party.  Below you will find links to the rest of the posts in our Mermaid-themed Party series.

At our house a party is not a party if you don’t break out the craft supplies and make something. Little hands love making things and tween hands LOVE making things with glue guns so this Mermaid Party Hat DIY was right up their alley.

I didn’t have any blue party hats and I didn’t feel like making my own from card stock and elastic string (but you totally could) so I bought some inexpensive party hats in a generic design and spray-painted them blue to match our party.

Then we covered our table with brown kraft paper and set it with bowls and bowls of fun sea-inspired bits and bobs. I set up some non-toxic paint, paint brushes, paper plates for paint palettes, glue, glitter and of course some jars of water for washing brushes. We included pom-poms and sequins, clear beads and marbles, shells and sea glass…pretty much anything sea-related I could find in my vast craft cabinets and collections from beach days over the years. (Sometimes being an organized hoarder pays off!)

I set a party hat for each girl around the table with a paper plate underneath it to catch glitter and drips. Then I plugged in two (cool temperature) glue guns at either end of the table and let the girls get creative on their hat designs. (Also note that I put a paint tarp below the table just in case of any paint or glitter spills happened that I didn’t really want going into my rug. You know how that can happen.)

The girls had a blast crafting the afternoon away. An hour and a half later everyone had a decorated mermaid party hat to wear. We put them on, donned our swimsuits and headed to the pool for the rest of our mermaid-themed party!

Because that’s how mermaids throw a party in our neck of the woods!
