Mermaid Party Cupcakes and Cookies!

By Brenda Ponnay

This is an installment of our Mermaid-themed Party series.  Here are the mermaid cupcakes and octopus tentacle cookies we served and how you can make your own if you’re throwing your own party. Below you will find links to the rest of the posts in our Mermaid-themed Party series.

All summer long we’ve been deep in the throes of a full-blown mermaid obsession at our house. We’ve made mermaid icebox cookies and mermaid-colored pancakes. We’ve brushed our hair with dinglehoppers and painted our nails with mermaid scales. We acquired real mermaid tails with mono fins and splashed under the moonlight. It was the great mermaid summer!

How to Make Octopus Tentacle Cookies

Baking and decorating your own octopus tentacle cookies are not for the faint of heart but if you like a little cookie decorating fun, they might be just the cookie for you and your friends.

1) We used our favorite sugar cookie recipe to make the dough, leaving out the baking soda so that the cookies didn’t rise too much and lose their shape. We colored it red with food coloring because we like red octopi.

2) We rolled out the dough to the usual quarter-inch thickness but instead of using cookie cutters, we cut long spindly octopus arm shapes with a knife.

3) Then we baked them on a cookie sheet.

4) After they cooled we iced them with light pink (royal icing) suction cups.

Mermaid Cupcakes

For the cupcakes we made special cupcake toppers that we would love to share with you. These are designed to fit a 1.5 inch punch but you can cut them out with scissors too.

In fact, we kind of like the hand-cut ones better because then the mermaids look like they are swimming in blue waves of icing!

Just attach toothpicks to the back with tape and you are ready to decorate your cupcakes!

Perhaps you can make aqua blue cupcakes with “blue ocean wave” icing. Perfect for poolside enjoyment! Tails and fins not necessary.
