You know what cures the post-holidays blues? Snow Day Fun cupcakes! What are they you ask? Read on and we’ll show you!

Whether you are looking for something to do with your kids when you’re stuck home on a snow day or you are like us (in year-round warm southern California), and think snow is next to magical unicorn dust, these cupcakes are the perfect way to brighten up an otherwise dreary winter day.  Also, these make for great food treats for a winter- or ski-themed party.

First, print out your little snow people printables here and carefully cut them out with an exacto knife. This part was a bit laborious but if you are the crafty type it is so worth the extra effort because the they look real when you perch them atop some fluffy white icing. Then attach the snow people to a toothpick with a bit of tape on the back.

I also made a circle-punch version of our snowy day characters for my favorite 1.75″ hole punch for our readers who don’t have the time to making small laborious cuts. (Click here for the circle punch version) Don’t worry they are fun and look great, too. See above! Attach your toothpick the same way. If you want your cupcake toppers to be two sided just print an extra copy and use double-stick tape to attach two toppers together with the toothpick inside.

Then make (or buy) your vanilla cupcakes, white frosting AND a batch of blueberry gelatin dessert (for the “ice skating frozen pond”).

For the snow cupcakes, frost your cupcakes with all white icing and then sprinkle some blue sanding sugar on top. Stick your snow people in however you like. I loved putting my skiers on frosting peaks so they looked like they were actually skiing down a hill and my snowboarders I stuck in drifts so they looked like they were shredding snow at me. Have fun and let your kids play with them!

For the “ice skating frozen pond” cupcakes take a spoon and carve out a little divot out of the middle of the top of your cupcake. Then take a different spoon (you don’t want to get crumbs in your gelatin) and scoop out a similar size scoop of gelatin dessert and place it gently into the hole in your cupcake. Then take your white frosting and ice it around the pond to look like snow drifts. Sprinkle some blue sanding sugar around the edges and you have a “frozen pond!” Stick ice skaters into the gelatin pond and you have a happy little snow scene!

We had some extra cake mix so we made a small cake and created an even bigger pond in the middle of it for more ice-skating fun. This would be great for any winter-themed party. But we’re not done yet. If you are looking for more things to do during your snow day how about some snow-day coloring sheets!
