Merry Mermaid Christmas Craft!

By Brenda Ponnay

You knew we couldn’t let a holiday go by without a mermaid craft! At my house, it’s Mermaid Season all year round.  How about a mermaid snow globe or Christmas tree ornament for the holidays?!  We made one and wanted to share how we did it.

Supplies needed to make a Mermaid Snow Globe Ornament

  • plastic pop apart ornaments (we used these)
  • our mermaid in a sweater printable (click to print here)
  • scissors and/or an exacto knife and self-healing mat  (As always, have a responsible crafter handle sharp blades!)
  • hot glue (As always, have a responsible crafter handle a hot glue gun!)
  • shells, clear beads (optional)
  • fake snow flakes (we used these)
  • ribbon for decoration
  • mason jar lid (for snow globe version only)

How to make a Mermaid Snow Globe Ornament

First print out the printable and fold it in half at the top of the Christmas hat. (A handy tip: Hold it up to a window to make sure the water curves at the bottom; line up for the front of the mermaid and the back of the mermaid.) Start cutting around the outline of the mermaid with scissors. Cut out the little bits with an exacto knife on a self-healing mat.

Once the mermaid is cut out (Make sure she looks good from both sides) put a small dab of hot glue on the bottom inside of one side of the plastic ornament. Gently place the bottom of the mermaid into that dab of hot glue. Add two more dabs on each side of the ornament to attach the mermaid to the sides. At this point you can also glue in your shells and use them to cover up any visible glue.

Then add snow and clear beads to both sides of the mermaid and carefully pop your ornament together. Secure the ornament together with another dab of hot glue. Add a pretty bow and you are ready to hang her on your tree or give her as a gift!

If you would like to make a “waterless snow globe” with your mermaid, just attach a mason jar lid (or peanut butter jar lid if it’s the right size) to the bottom of your plastic ornament. Put on display and enjoy your wintery oceanic scene!
