Mother’s Day and Milestone Memories

There are many milestones in a baby’s life but one of the most memorable is of the first steps. My toddler, Thomas, took his around 11 months. I remember the moment perfectly. We were visiting Shelter Island for a weekend getaway and after a full day of exploring, hiking and bike riding we finally settled in for the night. Matt and I were putting a puzzle together as my tween daughter, Lily, played with Thomas. Then we heard, “Look Mom, Dad, Thomas is walking”. Lily called to him and there was Thomas … taking his first steps… toward his big sister. And just like that we had a new walker on our hands, ready to go explore the great big world.

A baby’s milestones are a mother’s milestones as well. In that moment I remember thinking, this is Thomas’s life now, his little legs will take him on all sorts of adventures and while I will be there to dust off the little nicks and bruises along the way, it’s his journey that lies ahead. It’s a thrilling and sweet moment… those first steps. And an adventure has been exactly what the past year has brought us….

It’s Mother’s Day this weekend and of course it’s making me nostalgic about the past year spent with my growing boy. Let me take a deep breath here and feel the power of being his mom.

I have loved being home with Thomas during these first years, and he has been my sidekick and constant companion on our weekly shopping trips. Shopping at Costco is always a special adventure.

He notices the seasonal offerings – this week he was really excited about the surfboards, the inflatable pools, and of course the food samplings throughout the store. Thomas’ favorite stop is the flower wall, as he calls it. He likes to stop and smell the flowers and we usually leave with a sweet bouquet for his big sister.

What he doesn’t know is that Costco is my secret weapon for finding all the staples I need while also providing him some entertainment. From fresh produce to diapers and wipes, Costco is our one-stop shop.
