Leprechaun Cupcakes (and Free Toppers) for St. Patrick’s Day!

By Brenda Ponnay

Do you have some little leprechauns at home that would like a special St. Patrick’s Day treat? We’ve got just the thing! Green grass cupcakes with our own printable leprechaun toppers (find them below)!

Leprechaun Cupcakes for St. Patrick's DayWhat we think would be really fun is to set up a treasure hunt with little clues all over your home and then leave these cupcakes in a basket at the end of the hunt! That’s what I would do. But then I’ve always loved treasure hunts ever since I was a little kid.

Leprechaun Cupcake supplies

  • cupcakes (homemade or store-bought will do!)
  • green icing (homemade or store-bought, your choice!)
  • a grass icing tip and icing bag
  • our leprechaun printable (see below)
  • rainbow sprinkles (optional)

Paper leprechauns and four leaf clovers for craft

Let’s get started!

First bake your cupcakes (or take them out of their store-bought package.) Then print out our handy printables (there are four versions: 2 with shamrocks/leprechauns/pot of gold and 2 with four-leaf clovers/leprechauns/pot of gold.)

1) Circle punch version (four-leaf clover) here

2) Circle punch version (shamrock) here

3) Regular Leprechaun (with four leaf-clover) with no outlines for more detailed cutting

4) Regular Leprechaun (with shamrock) with no outlines for more detailed cutting

If you have a circle punch you can skip the tedious cutting step but, personally, I think the little leprechauns, clovers and rainbows look better when they are cut out around their edges with only a little bit of white space. They look like they are sitting on a patch of grass just like our snow people looked like they were standing in drifts of snow! That’s the fun of it.

Child icing green cupcakes with green frosting

Now you are ready to ice your “tufts of green grass.” It’s a bit tricky so take some time and practice a little. Squeeze a little bit out of the tube and then stop and lift the tube away to break the small strands. Sometimes the icing squeezes will want to squish together but don’t fret you can always pipe some new grass strands on top. The kids probably won’t complain about too much frosting.

Then top with some rainbow sprinkles and your leprechaun cupcake toppers!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
