Father’s Day and Special Bonding Memories

By Maria Colaco

As I mentioned last month, I’ve partnered with Huggies to share stories about my family and provide tips and advice on their newest premium baby care items. We have been using Huggies Little Movers Plus Diapers and Huggies Natural Care Wipes Plus that are brand new at Costco. Stay tuned for a summer’s worth of adventures with my little mover and a few fab deals for you to stock up on the most absorbent diapers for day and night protection. When the summer days are especially long and you’re out and about for extended day trips, this protection is extra helpful.

With Father’s Day around the corner I want to share a really memorable and thoughtful story my husband Matt made soon after our son Thomas was born. His birth was an incredible experience for our family. He was induced a full seven days after his due date, so I was well into my 41st week of pregnancy. Thomas’ birth was ‘high risk’ and he lost a significant amount of weight soon after he was born. I was very focused on breastfeeding and skin-to-skin bonding, and this was my life 24-hours a day. Thomas was attached to my body all day– all the time– for all his needs. And this lasted for the first few months.

I’ll never forget that time, during his first few days home, when I awoke in the middle of the night to change Thomas’ diaper, but Matt insisted that he take over. Of course, I wasn’t going to stop him but his reasoning was very touching. Newborns essentially only do two things at first. They eat and they poop. I was feeding Thomas, and as his only source of nutrition, I was lucky enough to be bonding with him so closely. But Matt wanted to handle the diaper changes so that he could have an opportunity to handle Thomas’ needs and thus tend to him as well. As a mother, there is so much that happens with a newborn in the very first stages of life, and through my husband Matt’s experience it became clear to me that often times fathers might feel left out.

Now that Thomas is a toddler, not only have the Huggies Little Movers Plus Diaper changes continued, but the two have an incredibly strong bond. Thomas loves when Matt reads him books every night, with a few favorites on heavy rotation.

Elaborate wooden train tracks are set up in the playroom where Thomas and Matt spend time coming up with imaginative “choo-choo stories.” The two have their own inside jokes and their own silly games and sometimes I can catch a snippet of a conversation about bugs, dinosaurs and monsters and mermaids.

With his dad, there are also lots of games of chase, and peek-a-boo. That should be no surprise. As a two year old, Thomas is on the go non-stop. Huggies Little Movers Plus Diapers stay on his busy body and move along with him. The double grip strips at the waist not only keep the diaper on him, but also stretch enough to give him a comfy fit. You can find these diapers with his favorite character – Mickey Mouse – brand new at Costco. We pair our Huggies Little Movers Plus Diapers with the Huggies Natural Care Wipes Plus. The wipes are great for sensitive skin since they are more cushiony soft.

Happy Father’s Day to all the dapper dads out there!
