Tegu Blocks

By Isabel Kallman

What do you see when you see the blocks above? I see a battalion of Star Wars Storm Troopers. And, therein lies the beauty of these Tegu Blocks.

They remind me of Legos in their innovation. But they’re eco-friendly wooden blocks with magnets deeply embedded in them, allowing you your kids to click them together creating whatever their little heads dream up. Soon, after my son was done creating a giraffe I found him using the magnetic planks to spell out words on our HVAC unit. Ah, they serve as fridge magnets too! The Original Set includes 52 blocks in four shapes: 20 cubes, 16 long planks, 10 short planks, and 6 jumbo planks. But you can invest in a smaller (and less expensive) 26-piece starter set.

Tegu Blocks

True, Tegu toys are not inexpensive right now. (Hopefully, as the company grows they can achieve economies of scale in production that will bring those sales prices down). But for now, I like to consider them investment pieces. Investments for your children and for Honduras.

See for every Tegu toy you buy, you have a choice: Tegu will plant 12 trees in Honduras or fund one day of school for a child who would otherwise work on a trash dump near Tegucigalpa, Honduras.

Tegu Blocks

Beside the uber-fun factor of the Tegu toys are the story behind the company which is founded by two socially and environmentally-conscious brothers. They chose to start their own toy factory in Honduras which is home to beautiful tropical hardwoods which can be sustainably harvested. Their goal is to be a desirable employer in Honduras where the unemployment rate is 30%.

Since first learning about Tegu years ago, the company has continued to expand and grow its product line.  It now makes basic building blocks and toys for babies and toddlers (the other blocks are for kids aged 3+ because they have magnets), and fun collections like monsters, and stunt team.
