Earth Day Pizzas

By Brenda Ponnay

This is one of those activities that is more about the process than how the end result looks, but here at Alpha Mom we know that not every idea comes out Pinterest-worthy. It’s more about what you are doing with your kids and the quality time you spend together than how picture-perfect everything is. (Having said that, the perfectionist-crafter in me is feeling terrible about how the “end-result” pictures turned out, but we’re posting it anyway because we had a great time making these homemade pizzas and ultimately that’s what is important.)

Every day is a good day to celebrate our earth and do more to take care of our home, but it’s fun to make a special day of it, too. Recycling, making trips to the beach to pick up trash, turning off lights…  that’s all great but what about making dinner and learning more about continents while we do it?

We made “Earth Pizzas” and learned we need to seriously brush up on our geography!

Step 1: First, we rolled out some pizza dough. You can make this from scratch or be like me and buy it already pre-made from your local market (best invention ever, btw). Rolling dough into a circle is a fun challenge. Feel free to throw your dough up in the air like a pizza maker!

I set out a bowl of tomato sauce and a tray of toppings. Put out all your favorites: ham, prosciutto, pepperoni, chopped peppers, spinach, pineapple tidbits, olives…and of course lots of cheese!

Step 2: Then let everyone make their own pizza and see if they can make something that tastes delicious and looks like the world at the same time. It’s a challenge but a fun one! We found that ham made the best continents if we cut it into shapes and overlapped pieces to fill in. Olives and peppers made for a great equator, and spinach sort of made a great ocean. Like I said, it’s more about the process than the end result.

Step 3: Then we baked them up, cut them into pieces and served them on a board so everyone could try all the different variations. Some kids might like a world that is all cheese so we came up with ideas about how that might be the world during a big storm or maybe the polar ice caps melting. However you tell it, it is a great time to talk about our earth and make a delicious dinner at the same time.

Anything that gets us all in the kitchen talking about is always a good time.

Happy Earth Day!
