How to Organize Your Hair Accessories

By Amalah

Dear Amy,
I’ve gone back and forth about sending this question in — it just might be the dumbest one ever, but I’m driving myself crazy here and I know I’m missing an obvious solution.
I wear my hair in ponytails a lot. To the gym, walking my dog, around the house, etc. I use the clear plastic “ouchless” bands since they seem to be gentler on my hair and I like the way they look. And here lies my problem: I lose these suckers like crazy! I can never seem to find one, even though I know I’ve bought at least a dozen packages so far this year.
I know, I know, I should just have a spot for them and be better about putting them back, but…where? I’ve tried keeping them in the bottom of my makeup case, in a cup by the sink, in my gym bag, but I still seem to space out when I pull them out of my hair and they end up scattered around my house, everywhere except where I need them to be when I’m putting my hair in a ponytail.
(The same goes for any of my hair things, come to think of it — I also buy tons of those little snappy barrettes for my bangs and am lucky if I have one or two after a few weeks.)
Help me with my dumb problem, Amy!
Jen

hairbands.jpgAhhh, I love the smell of an easy question in the morning! And by “easy” I don’t mean “dumb,” because I struggled with this exact same problem for YEARS before finally stumbling on that elusive obvious solution you mentioned. (And I’m 99% sure I read it in a beauty advice column…in a magazine. Crazy old school, cats!)
You know how you (usually) use your hairbrush to put your hair in a ponytail? And when you take said ponytail out, you again (usually) use your hairbrush? That right there is your hair band landing dock. Pull band out of hair, wrap tightly around brush handle. Voila. Hair bands, right where you need them!
My hairbrushes (my big-ass giant one and my little purse-sized one) always have a decent row of hair bands on them — I usually wrap a slew around the handle right when I buy a package and then store the package in a drawer somewhere in case I still manage to lose a few.
As for barrettes and hair clips — I keep those snipped to a long, wide piece of brightly-colored ribbon. Some bit of heavy grosgrain ribbon that came with a store-wrapped present. When I was in college I kept the whole thing tacked up to my bulletin board…now it’s just tossed in the same drawer as my styling products, blow-dryer and other assorted hair accessories. It takes up less room than any kind of special storage box (which I know I probably wouldn’t keep very organized after awhile), and keeps everything visible and within easy reach. I still generally have a few loose barrettes floating around my bags and house (and I’m perpetually wanting my BLACK claw clip but only my BROWN claw clips have made it back to the drawer, or vice versa), but overall it’s the best system I’ve found.
