@Kate - I have an epilator, and I like it, although I just use it on my legs and use wax strips for the bikini line. You certainly could use it on the bikini line too, it does a good job of grabbing even little hairs, but I find that it stretches the pain out too long for me to stick with it (my hairs there seem to be REALLY well anchored). The upside to me (over wax) is that you only have to buy it once and there's way less mess. The downside is that it takes longer and mine is pretty noisy.

I was planning my first bikini wax, and came across this great thread, not to mention site. I literally left the spa just 20 minutes ago and wanted to share my story and ask for some advice! I have really sensitive skin and there is definite redness and some bleeding (to be expected, right?), but because of this the waxer was unwilling to remove everything that I desired. I agree to a certain extent, but feel like I left not completely satisfied. She also turns out not to do Brazilians, and although I wanted a French anyways, she left a lot more than I was expecting. New waxer, I guess?
Altogether it wasn't a horrible experience! A bit painful, but not that bad, and only slight stinging now. So go for it!

Ellise - I have had many professional waxes and loved them. However, it can get expensive so I usually just shave. Like with anything else there is a small adjustment period, but after a couple weeks of shaving(about every 3-5 days)you will stop itching. It will be just as comfortable as shaving your legs. I have also tried home waxing, but it really just isn't the same result as a professional wax. I don't recommend doing it yourself, especially your first time. If you just really want to wax yourself though I would go to a beauty supply store. They will have a much better selection of waxes. Just ask whoever works there for help and they will be able to give you information on which wax will give you the best result. Sometimes they even have tips on the most effective way to get the reult you want.

i really want to know more about this epilator that someone mentioned before in a comment awhile back. its basically like tweezing but faster and you can do it at home without the embarrassment of going to a salon. with the same result as waxing? can anyone tell me more about it with experiences?

Alright girls I need some advice. I have shaved down there a couple of times but it is uncomfortable and I always cut myself. So I want to wax. for the most part completly. I dont have a problem with my bikini line I just want it all gone. I do not however want to spend a ton of money to have some stranger look at me and wax me. So I need advice on tricks that actually work and especially on what waxing product to use that will produce te best results. Its kind of a present for my boyfreind so as soon as possible would be appriciated. Thank you. Please email me with suggestions

thanks for all the comments...most of the comments have occured over 2 years ago..
NOW..for the main question..im having a hard time researching/locating a reputable waxing salon/waxer in my area! i dont want to go to a mini mall nail salon with open doors, etc...
i remember i tried waxing once about 20 years ago..and after one strip screamed in horror (and that was only 'bikini'..and had her remove it via water and left!
now ...im willing to pay for a good wax and the professionalism..and i think after all these years of shaving and rashes i will deal with the pain
i live in northern va..ive tried every site avail to 'research' a spa...nothing comes up but DC..and help would be great
on a footnote, i did try laser, with a reputable dr. who removed a tattoo for me.... for about 2 years, i went every 2-3 months and paid about $100...the hair did get finer...but was no less of it...i think it was a total waste of time and pain! (yeah, the laser hurts)
now after years of going back to shaving...or just not (hence the not dating much) im ready to go all the way
HELP!

OK I know the last comment was two years ago, but I would like to say THANK YOU for this article! I'm typing this from my bathroom since I sent hubby out for some baby oil so I can remove the lovely bit of wax left between some rather *ahem* uncomfortable places. Seriously, I'm glad I went. I want to go back and have it done again, too. This was insanely painful this time, but I can tell that it will get better. The lady that did the waxing was super nice, talked to me like an old friend the entire time. It wasn't awkward, or creepy, or anything bad. In fact, I would go so far as to say that I feel like a woman!

never been waxed and considering it...
when i trim up with sissors my hair feels coarse and prickly and i hate it so i always regret it. when its au natural it is soft but i want a summer solution to the bikini issue. SO, if i dont want length im guessing id have to go for a bare wax and let the center grow in soft and then just wax the bikini line from then on? cause if i wax just the sides and trim the center id still have that prickly feeling right?

Just a comment from one of the guys. I'm a cyclist and triathlete and have always shaved during the summer and competition months. My girlfriend got a Brazilian prior to our vacation to Hawaii. She had a very good experience and talked me into giving it a go for my legs. As several people have already posted, the aesthetician was very professional and treated me great. I'm hooked! I'm a moderately hairy guy but still get 4-6 weeks from waxing. Beats the heck out of shaving. Initial cost $65 and I left a $20 tip. Followups have been 50 and I still leave a twenty.
