Salma Hayek on Her Daughter, Motherhood & Shoes

By Isabel Kallman

This is Part Two of my in-person interview with Salma Hayek, the ambassador for the UNICEF/ Pampers One Pack=One Vaccine Program. Part One of my in-person interview with Salma Hayek can be found here.
Interview with Salma HayekFirst, of all, let’s just get out of the way what you all really want to know. YES, she is just as gorgeous in person. Her lashes are super-duper long and her waist is teeny-weeny. Her hair is super thick and she wore it in her famous center part.

Amongst the serious talk about life-saving vaccines and her humanitarian work with UNICEF, I was able to ask more personal mom questions. Go me!

Salma on Motherhood
But before I get to writing about light-hearted stuff, like Salma’s boots, I need to share how Salma, just like millions of other moms, faced isolation as a new mother. She said, “I think it’s important to have a network [of moms] to connect with. I felt lonely and wish I had interaction with other mothers.”

Motherhood really is the great equalizer.

Salma on her daughter, Valentina
When asked whether Valentina is like her or Valentina’s dad (business magnate, Francois Henri Pinault), she carefully thought about it and shook her head several times, that she is like neither. “She is her own person!” Salma announced confidently.
Salma shared that Valentina’s favorite books include Goodnight Moon, Good Night, Gorilla, I Spy books, the Winnie the Pooh tales, and interactive “peekaboo” type French books that her dad bought her.

And, how cute is this? Valentina’s lovey? Salma’s pajamas.

Salma on stilettos
For those of you who don’t know me well yet. I’ve got this thing for shoes. I love ’em.

So, when Salma appeared at the press conference wearing these kicking boots, I needed to know who made them. So, as the press conference was winding down I asked her? Manolo or Louboutin? (I knew they weren’t Louboutin because they didn’t have the tell-tale red sole).

Her answer: Alexander McQueen. And thereafter we shared some tips on designer shoes. She offered up Balenciaga. I offered Alexandra Neel.

One thing I know for sure. Mamas, they love shoes and babies.
