Baby Gender Reveal Party Idea: DIY confetti poppers!
Baby Gender Reveal Parties seem to be all the rage these days and I can totally understand why. Why share the ultimate news of whether your baby is a boy or a girl in the clinical setting of an ultrasound appointment or with excited phone calls when you can celebrate that surprise with all your close friends and family in a big ta-da moment? I say, bring on the party! It’s probably the last one expectant parents will be having for a while anyway, you might as well make a big deal out of it.
I thought it would be fun to make some gender reveal confetti poppers (or homemade “Christmas crackers”) to announce the big news. Imagine a long table with all your favorite people sitting on the edges of their seats waiting in anticipation. Everyone grabs one end of a confetti popper, you count backwards from ten to zero and then when you get to zero everyone pulls their end of the confetti popper and blue or pink confetti flies into the air announcing the big news!!
Sound like fun? Well, here’s how you (or someone you trust with your top-secret information) can make these poppers yourself. They are super easy and you probably have all the supplies already on hand.
First you’ll need to gather your supplies:
• several small 5-6 inch squares of tissue paper in gender neutral colors
• several toilet paper tubes cut into thirds
• twine or ribbon
• double-sided tape
• confetti in blue or pink depending on the sex of the baby
• scissors
Now just follow these simple steps to put them together:
Step 1. Cover the outside of your tube with a a strip of double-sided tape.
Step 2. Wrap two squares of tissue paper around the tube, sticking it carefully to the tape. I used two sheets of tissue to insure that no one could see through the tissue paper and see the revealing confetti until the big moment.
Step 3. Twist one end of the tissue paper until it seals off the tube creating a small pocket for your confetti. Hold it closed with your fingers.
Step 4. Fill the chamber with confetti.
Step 5. Twist the open-end closed.
Step 6. Tie both ends with a small piece of twine or ribbon.
So simple right? Now just repeat these steps until you have enough poppers for each guest or enough for each guest to share with one other person.
You can put them in a bowl for everyone to take one or if you are having a sit-down dinner or desert, set one at each place setting. Just make sure everyone knows they are not allowed to open them until the big moment.
I thought it would be fun to have a white-on-white party so that the confetti would play a big roll with its pop of color but I think these poppers would also look super cute in orange or yellow or whatever color you choose to be the theme of your party. You could even make a printed strip saying something like “Let’s find out!” or “What will it be?” and wrap it around the poppers.
There are a million ways you could customize these to fit your celebration. Now who’s going to have a baby so I can make you some of these?!!

Update: yup, there is an interesting discussion going on in the comments section. I think everyone is making valid points and pushing the conversation forward. I think if we were to get a “Do Over” for this party idea, I would suggest that any color confetti be used and the symbols for female and male be marked on the confetti to identify the sex, not gender of the child. I actually think this would make this idea more creative and fun.
