The Alpha Mom Parenting Book Club

By Chris Jordan

Alpha Mom book club logoBook clubs are so popular because we all like to talk about what we have just read, whether we loved the book or hated it, whether we thought the characters were likeable, how much applies to our own life and how the ending is never quite right.  When I was talking about book clubs with my kids, one of  my sons said that he wants to know why there aren’t TV clubs, where you would watch tv shows together and talk about it.  I told him it does exist and it is called Twitter.

Usually when I read a parenting book I want to discuss it with other people and find out what they think of the book. Or, even find people who subscribe to the ideas in the book and see how it is working for them.

Now we can do just that, Welcome to the Alpha Mom Book Club!

The way we envision this book club working is that we will all read the book the same month. Then I will post what I thought about the book. What parts of the book resonate with me, what parts I didn’t like, if there were any parenting strategies I tried as a result of reading the book and whether I found them to be successful or not. Then we will have a discussion about the book in the comments section below, or if you have something very in depth to say post it on your own blog and link back in the comments. (Our comments section allows for threaded replies, so please utilize that).

The goal is to open up a dialogue about different issues. I know I can benefit from having new ideas in my parenting arsenal, whether it is new discipline ideas, topics that I hadn’t considered or things which cause me to rethink some of my long-held parenting techniques. Sometimes you realize that you have been doing the same thing, the same way for years without even questioning if it is working.

Each month, we’ll also vote on the next month’s book. But the voting period will only be open for several days to make sure we have enough time to read the next month’s book.

With that, we have picked five books to choose from. Whichever receives the most votes by Tuesday, Oct 2 will be October’s Alpha Mom Book Club pick:

The Blessing of a Skinned Knee, which is about stepping back and allowing your child to have the blessing of making their own mistakes. I know from personal experience that this is harder than you think!

The 5 Love Languages of Children, I have already read this book and while it is not a parenting book perse, it really revolutionized the way I parent my children and I’d love to reread it and hear what other people think about the idea of love languages.

How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk. Yes, I want to know how to do this, please! I often feel like I am talking to a brick wall.

Setting Limits with Your Strong-Willed Child. My word, I have the poster child for this book.

I’d Listen to My Parents If They’d Just Shut Up. This title makes me laugh. I believe this book is more directed to the parents of tweens and teens. Lucky me, I have both!

Thank you for all of you for voting! The 5 Love Languages of Children is our October book pick.  In November, we’ll start reading How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk.

Oh, she has seven of them. Yes, children.
Yes, they are all hers.
No she’s not Catholic or Mormon. Though she wouldn’t mind having a sister-wife because holy hell the laundry never stops.
Yes, she finally figured out what causes it. That’s why her youngest is a teen now.
Yes, she has a television.

She enjoys referring to herself in the third person.
