Our 30 Favorite Christmas Tunes

The Ultimate Christmas Playlist

Top 30 Christmas SongsAt my place, the holiday music starts earlier and earlier each year. And, I don’t think it has anything to do with the arrival of Holiday catalogs before Halloween. It’s just me and my sappy self getting into the spirit earlier now that I have a child that is growing older and appreciating the beauty of the season more.

I have loads and loads of Holiday music on CD and listening through my music catalog it’s pretty easy to recognize that Holiday music basically falls into two categories: 1) classics, renditions of which are sung by a gazillion musical artists (I’ve tried to identify not only great songs, but which artists performing these standard classics are my favorites), and 2) relatively new and unique songs on their way to becoming classics.

These are not in preferential order. I just like the flow of this playlist:

1. Baby, It’s Cold Outside by Zooey Deschanel and Leon Redbone (Elf Soundtrack)
2. Happy Xmas (War Is Over) by John & Yoko
3. Christmas Wrapping by The Waitresses
4. Santa Claus Is Coming To Town by Jackson 5
5. Do They Know It’s Christmas? by Band Aid
6. The 12 Days Of Christmas [Live] by Straight No Chaser*
7. Wonderful Christmastime by Paul McCartney
8. All I Want for Christmas by Samantha Mumba
9. Lonely Pup (In A Christmas Shop) by Adam Faith
10. Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree by Brenda Lee
11. Carol Of The Bells by Family Force 5
12. What Christmas Means To Me by Stevie Wonder
13. Blue Christmas by Charlie Daniels and Jewel
14. Santa Baby by Kylie Minogue
15. Peace On Earth/Little Drummer Boy by Bing Crosby & David Bowie
16. We Three Kings by Los Straightjackets
17. Little Saint Nick by The Beach Boys
18. Please Come Home For Christmas by Aaron Neville
19. All I Want For Christmas (Is My Two Front Teeth) by Nat King Cole
20. I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday by Wizzard
21. Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow by Michael Buble
22. Frosty The Snowman by Ella Fitzgerald
23. Stop The Cavalry by Jona Lewie
24. Lonely This Christmas by MUD
25. The Christmas Can-Can by Straight No Chaser*
26. The Christmas Song (Merry Christmas To You) by Nat King Cole
27. Winter Wonderland by Dean Martin
28. Christmastime Is Here by Vince Guaraldi Trio
29. Come on! Let’s Boogey to the Elf Dance! by Sufjan Stevens
30. It’s The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year by Andy Williams

Now that I have shared mine, you need to share yours? What are you faves?

I love this! And thanks for including Christmas Wrapping, my own favorite.
(After Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer. Of course.)

No Harry Connick, Jr on here? He seriously makes Christmas for me. Not really, but he has some awesome stuff. My favorite of his 3 (THREE!) albums is the first – When My Heart Finds Christmas. It has the happy “(It’s must’ve Been) Ol’ Santa Claus” on it and many other great ones. You really should check all of the albums out. They truly are fantastic.
Thanks for your list too! I am always looking for new Christmas tunes.

In Germany there is no Christmas without Wham! “Last Christmas”. It’s played all over the radio stations.
My favorite is “Do they know is Christmas” and some German children songs.

Oi to the World by The Vandals is one of my all-time favorites (No Doubt does a great remake too).

I am trying to find a christmas album for me and my two year old daughter to listen to together. Unfortunately I am having a horiffic time.
If you were to choose one christmas album for both of us to enjoy, which would it be???

Isabel: I love that question. My personal favorite Christmas album is a compilation from the UK appropriately titled: “The Best Christmas Album in the World… Ever!” But, it looks like it’s out of print and in high demand given the price on Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Best-Christmas-Album-World-Ever/dp/B00065EDW0/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1260496705&sr=8-3
My second choice would be: “Now that’s What I call Xmas” ” which is also a discontinued British import and seems expensive but it has 3 CDs in the compilation. Here it is on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000HXDHNC?ie=UTF8&tag=alpmom-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B000HXDHNC
