Inauguration Viewing Party

By Isabel Kallman

What a great week! It’s been so hard to settle down, what with all the excitement of the Inauguration. I’ve finally had a chance to breathe deeply and reflect on what a momentous occasion in this country’s history and in my own personal history as well.

A few months back I announced my 40 Before 40 list, you know, the things I wanted to get done before I turned 40. Well at the time I had 36 months to do it (BTW- I’ve been doing pretty well). I ended my personal goal list with Become a US Citizen and Vote. US Naturalization has been a longtime goal of mine and until the advent of the internet, not the easiest process. (But, I will leave that for a separate post).

When Quaker Oats asked me to host an Inauguration viewing party at my house for fellow friends to raise awareness for their Start With Substance to feed hungry children by donating up to 1 million bowls of oatmeal not only could I not say No, I viewed this party as an auspicious event to memorialize one of my biggest lifetime goals.

I did it. I completed, signed, and sent in my US Naturalization application! See, I had made some attempts before, but I needed this or that. Now, I did it all. Signed, sealed, delivered, I’m yours America. You’ve always have had my heart and my tax dollars, now I will have the right to vote (hopefully in 6 months), which is something you don’t realize is such a huge privilege until you cannot, but want to, do it.

I was beyond moved that I could share these moments of great historic and personal change with my friends. The internet is awesome!

Thank you Ali Martell (in from Canada!), Andi of Mama Knows Breast, Anna of Mommy Poppins, Brian of Looky, Daddy!, Gabrielle of Design Mom, Joanna of My Mom Shops, Liz of Mom 101, Metalia, and Torrie of I Pretty Much Hate Everything for sharing this special day with me. I was beyond thrilled a few of my guests brought their loved ones too, some of whom I’ve had the pleasure to get to know well over the years. Lucky me!

Thank you Quaker for catering and inspiring this party event and for your commitment to donate up to 1 million bowls of hot oatmeal to needy families. Please click over to do your part. It’s really easy: just type in the UPC code on any Quaker Oats box you have at home, until February 28.
