I love the henna idea, but please be careful when choosing a kit. Some kits, especially those labeled “black henna,” may contain black hair dye (PPD), which will chemically burn skin. Real henna should leave an orange-ish, reddish brown stain.

I don’t want to come off PC/preachy/unreasonably offended — though I’m sure I will. Sorry. Really.
I’m not sure how any of these “scream GIRL.” The only reason I can think of for boys not liking these is the ‘those are for girls’ stigma.
