Fourth of July Bunting

Celebrate the Fourth of July with this simple bunting made with starfruit prints. This sweet tropical fruit can simply be cut in half and used for printing, making a quick and easy kids’ project. Then the kids can eat the other half! We made our prints into a festive bunting, but you could adorn napkins, place mats, tablecloths or t-shirts.

Let’s get started!

After the kids printed the fabric I sewed the bunting, but you could just as easily use fabric glue for a quick no-sew project. I chose to let the edges of the burlap fray, but you could finish the edges or sew a quick running stitch around the edge to limit the fraying.

Supplies:

• Starfruit, cut in half
• Cream-colored burlap, 5 pieces 5″ x 8″ each
• Red acrylic or fabric paint
• Tray for dipping paint
• Paper or plastic to protect table
• Rope or twine for hanging
• Matching thread or fabric glue

Instructions:

1. After you have cut the starfruit in half, allow it to rest face down on a towel for a few hours to absorb the excess juices.
2. Cut your fabric and prepare your work surface. Squeeze the paint onto the tray and try a few sample prints.
3. Center the fruit on the lower portion of the burlap and make your prints.
4. Allow the fabric to dry for a few hours, then fold over the top edges and sew or glue the fabric onto the rope.
