DIY Father’s Day Gift: Monsterize his Phone Charger
You know what every dad needs in his life? More monsters. What better way to add a chuckle to Dad’s otherwise routine life than to plug his smart phone into a monster’s mouth every time it needs recharging. It’s like the monster is saying “Muhumumbofff!” which is roughly translated to “Here! Have your phone! Happy Father’s Day Pops!” I think it’s the perfect gift and guess what, you can make it yourself with just few simple supplies.
Here’s what you’ll need:
1. Monster fur. You can purchase this at your local fabric/craft store. You’ll need a 6×9 inch piece, roughly.
2. Scissors (preferably ones that will cut fabric)
3. Googlie Eyes size large
4. Pins
5. Small Square of Felt. Roughly 3×3 inches.
5. Air-Drying Modeling Clay
6. An Exacto Knife or Box Cutting Blade*
7. A Hot Glue Gun*
First you’ll need to form your monster head.
You want to make it kind of thick so that it’s heavy and sturdy and won’t crack and break from use after it hardens.
Make sure the mouth is a wedge like so and then use a plastic knife or your finger to create a hole in the back of the throat where your charger cord will go. Make sure it’s big enough to fit both ends of your charger cords so you can remove the cord at a later date if you need to.
Next you will wrap your monster head with your fur piece. It’s sort of like wrapping a present with all sides coming in towards the mouth.You can fold the end pieces into a triangle and then fold them inwards so that your corners are not too bulky. It’s okay if you don’t cover the monster head completely in the center because you will be coving the middle with your felt mouth piece.
Use pins to secure the fur into the clay. Just make sure your pins don’t poke through the clay and out the other side. You don’t want Dad poking himself on something sharp later.
Now flip your monster head over and cut a hole for your charger cord through the fur. You can test the hole with the charger to make sure it fits. Just be careful that your hole in the clay is big enough and you don’t go and ruin your charger’s usb port by jamming it up with soft clay.
Now it’s time to insert the mouth. First you’ll want to fit your phone or other device into the mouth to make sure it’s a good fit. The clay will still be soft so you can push and pull it a bit but don’t overwork it. Next cut a circle from your felt and cut a slit in the middle for the charger cord to go through. (Make sure the hole is big enough in both the clay and the felt to fit both ends of the charger cord in case you decide to remove the cord at some later date.) Insert the felt into the mouth and hot glue gun it to the fur.
You can even hot glue some teeth cut from a styrofoam plate at this point if you want to make your monster extra scary.
Next let your monster mouth sit for several days to air dry. Insert your phone cord charger and you’re ready to Monsterize!
