Summer Reading Reading Log (Printable)

By Ellen Luckett Baker

With summer in full swing, it’s time for the kids to get busy with summer reading. Our seven-year-old has finally become interested in reading on her own outside of school, so I have been trying to encourage her and created this simple chart for keeping track of the books she’s reading this summer.

It’s helpful to hang the reading log in a place where your child will see it every day to serve as a reminder, perhaps giving you a relief from nagging! If your child is stuck, you could connect reading with a reward system. I think our greatest trouble was finding something that interested our daughter. I have to admit that some of the early readers and chapter books are not enticing.

Here are some helpful resources to find great books that will help you hook your kids into a love of reading:

Reading Rockets: comprehensive site funded by the U.S. Department of Education.

Reading Planet: interactive site from non-profit group, Reading is Fundamental.

Guys Read: a great site for book suggestions and helpful hints for boys.

Storyline Online: videos featuring members of the Screen Actors Guild reading stories aloud. Obviously not a substitute for reading to your kids, but probably better than TV or video games.

International Children’s Digital Library: read over 4000 books online for free.

Book Adventure: free program from Sylvan Learning that creates a reward system for reading books, based on the answers to multiple choice quizzes.

U.S. Department of Education: list of reading resources with links.

Have any other ideas or resources for helping kids develop enthusiasm for reading? With so many people using the internet as a homeschooling assistant, there is a vast array of online resources. Add your suggestions to the comments here.
