Earth Day Cupcake Toppers

By Brenda Ponnay

This year to celebrate Earth Day (April 22), we planned a little kids’ craft party and of course we had to serve snacks to our guests so we made some Earth Day cupcakes!

Making buttercream frosting for earth day cupcakes

First we whipped up some chocolate cupcakes. I was thinking about sinking a chocolate into the middle of them for the “molten core” but I skipped that step. Please try that if you are going to make some. I think the kids would have gotten a kick out of a geology lesson tied into a cupcake.

Then I enlisted my daughter, the coloring expert, to create earth and water colored buttercream frosting. When we had just the right colors mixed up, we carefully spooned them into icing bags and piped on some ocean and continent blobs onto our chocolate earth cupcakes. The kids had fun naming off the continents as they frosted and then to keep the fun going they added some white frosted weather systems.

“I’m sorry, Japan, you just got a severe hurricane,” said my daughter as she smeared white frosting over formation of island blobs.

Chocolate and buttercream are always delicious and with a sweet Earth Day cupcake topper poked into them, they were perfect for our crafternoon party!

These toppers were designed to fit a 1.5 inch circle punch if you don’t feel like cutting out a bunch of circles. Once you cut (or punch) them out, attach to a toothpick with tape to the back and you are ready to pop them into cupcakes and celebrate!

P.S. Don’t forget to use recycled paper for your cupcake toppers.  We want to keep the Earth happy!
