Salt dough is an amazing medium especially for kids. By using jars from your recycling bin you can turn out a wonderful array of vessels to display all over your house.

These jars are great for potting wheat grass for Easter, gifting small chocolates or as vases for an Easter bouquet. Since Mother’s Day is around the corner, you could also save this craft for May.

Salt Dough Recipe
* 4 cups of flour
* 1 cup of salt
* 2 to 2 ½ cups warm water
* Knead until smooth. You want a nice soft dough.

Working on wax paper, make sure you have some water, some flour, your jar, a rolling pin, a dull knife and a toothpick.

You want to cover your jar first. The easiest way is to roll out a flat piece of dough, cut to fit and then join your ends together using some water as glue.

You can now mold your face by pinching the features out from the dough on the jar as well as adding extra dough pieces using water as your glue. If your fingers are getting sticky dip them in the flour.

When done you can bake your jar in the oven at 250 degrees for about 2 – 3 hours. It may still feel a bit soft but the dough will harden as it cools. Interestingly, salt dough responds to the humidity in the air at any given time and will become soft after being bone dry….just let it be and don’t worry .

Paint your creation with acrylic paint and then seal with glossy Mod Podge when dry.

If you want to make colored salt dough to create with take your plain dough and add some acrylic craft paint. Knead like crazy until the color is distributed. Initially it will look quite marbled but the more you knead the more consistent it will get.

Create as before, bake, and seal with glossy Mod Podge when cooled.
