Yarn God’s Eye Tutorial: popular kids’ summer craft http://alphamom.com/family-fun/crafts/gods-eye-tutorial-craft/ http://alphamom.com/family-fun/crafts/gods-eye-tutorial-craft/#comments Mon, 15 Jun 2015 15:24:15 +0000 http://alphamom.com/?p=37395

My daughter came home from her summer day camp and was thrilled to show me the God’s Eye she had made. I remember loving to make them when I was younger, too. They are the perfect little craft!

It is called God’s eye for Eye of God. In Spanish, Ojo de Dios.  It is a weaving typically made with wood and many different colors of yarn .

God's Eye Weaving Craft Tutorial by Cindy Hopper for Alphamom.com

Supplies for God’s Eye craft

All you need for this mess-free craft is yarn and two wooded sticks the same length.  We used popsicle sticks but tree branches or dowel rods would also work.

God's Eye Weaving Craft Tutorial by Cindy Hopper for Alphamom.com

Tutorial for God’s Eye craft

To make it easier to start weaving, hot glue the sticks together.  Sticks could also be fastened with a rubber band.

God's Eye Weaving Craft Tutorial by Cindy Hopper for Alphamom.com

Hold the end of the yarn on top of the wood and wrap yarn around the stick catching the end.

God's Eye Weaving Craft Tutorial by Cindy Hopper for Alphamom.com

Wrap all the way around the stick then move under the next stick. Wrap all the way around that stick then move to the next stick. Always bring the yarn under the stick before wrapping around.

Here is a video that shows how to wrap the yarn for the God’s Eye.

When you want to change colors simply cut the yarn and tie on a new color and begin wrapping again.

When finished tie the end of the yarn to the stick where you ended. Push any end pieces where two colors were tied together to the back.

This God’s Eye weaving craft is a great boredom buster. It is easy to keep the simple supplies on hand so they could be made at any time!

How are you keeping busy this summer?

It’s graduation season and we are enjoying celebrating our high school grad at events filled with friends, food, fun and gifts. Our son has worked hard and now is ready for a new adventure. It is hard to let him go, but I am focusing on getting him ready, rewarding his hard work and sending him off in style.

Back to the Future

What an amazing journey it has been. How much we have loved watching my son and his friends grow. From little kids eating cupcakes…

and now off to college! These children of ours have so much potential and are blessed with so many gifts. I am so excited to see what life has in store for them.

Celebrating Your College-Bound Graduate by Cindy Hopper for Alphamom.com

These boys are still enjoying cupcakes, and I made sure to have cute graduation-themed ones served at our party this past weekend for my son and his fellow grads to enjoy.

My son will be going out of state to Arkansas for college to study business (he’s an entrepreneur at heart) and needs a few items to keep him comfortable at school. We registered with Target’s Back to College registry so he had a hand in choosing some of the graduation gifts he might receive. The Target College Registry is ensuring he is getting the items he wants… and useful things my husband and I think he really needs.  We hope it will make moving-in day easier, so we don’t have to run errands al day and can spend time exploring his campus together instead.

Words of Wisdom

Celebrating Your College-Bound Graduate by Cindy Hopper for Alphamom.com #backtocollege

The part that made these gifts extra special was we asked guests to share advice in the greeting cards accompanying the wrapped gifts.

Celebrating Your College-Bound Graduate by Cindy Hopper for Alphamom.com

This mini fridge was a generous group gift from a few family friends and the card read “Make sure to fill your fridge with healthy snacks to keep you growing and going!”  Nice and practical advice.

Celebrating Your College-Bound Graduate by Cindy Hopper for Alphamom.com

I can only hope this is what I will see in this refrigerator when I visit him at college!

Celebrating Your College-Bound Graduate by Cindy Hopper for Alphamom.com

Another dear family friend gifted him a Keurig from his registry and recommended that he make his own coffee since it’s less expensive per cup than to buy one at the coffee shop every day.  I found this great Graduation Party card box at Target and left note cards out for other party attendees to share additional words of wisdom for our graduate.  Coming from me, these words could sound like nagging, but this is practical everyday advice he actually needs to hear.  I’m hoping these helpful words are being imprinted on his brain, so every time he uses these items while at college he’ll remember what he read in his graduation cards from the other caring adults in his life.

Celebrating Your College-Bound Graduate by Cindy Hopper for Alphamom.com #backtocollege

Guests who didn’t include cards or didn’t buy anything off the registry also shared words of wisdom and advice for my son’s new life at college. While my boy may say that he does not want advice from his mom and dad… he might listen to his more experienced family friends. I found this great Graduation Party card box at Target and left note cards out for party attendees to share their thoughts.  I loved reading notes from my dearest friends where they tell my son “to be authentic,” “to follow his dreams,” “to be fearless.” It was also comforting to hear them reminding him to use college as an opportunity, not waste it.

These boys have had a great time and I know they are ready to go…

One thing I’ve learned in raising this graduate… it sure does take a village of family and friends. I hope the one thing he will feel more than anything is that he is loved to the moon and back by his family…always!

Congratulations, son.  We’re very proud of you!

This is post is sponsored by Target Back to College.

As a mom of a graduating high school senior this year I am thrilled about Target’s Back to College Registry. This allows our friends and family to buy exactly the items my son not only wants but actually needs for college. Finally, an easy way to give the perfect gift and not have to fall back on cash or a gift card.

Target Back to College Registry

My son was able to register for an account in minutes and then with a scanner in hand, he was off.

Target Back to College Registry

We talked about what he would need while living away at college.

I must admit I was not so ready for all of this. It was a bittersweet occasion. I am proud beyond measure of this young man who is hardworking, kind and loving. He constantly amazes me with his special gifts and talents, and his concern and care for others. He is ready for college and I am so thankful for that, but I will be so terribly sad to not have him with me every day.

I don’t know where the time has gone. I remember when he was a baby, and I was exhausted and feeling sorry for myself, another mother said to me, “Remember the days are long but the years are short.” That has always stuck with me.

It is a short time when you realize that you may only have 18 summers with your children living full-time at home. So that is what we have had and now I can look back and honestly say that that was the shortest time imaginable. I wish I could have 18 more years.

Target Back to College Registry

While I was reminiscing, my son was moving on, picking out items and making his list.

Target Back to College Registry

At the top of the list were the basics, like bedding and bath towels.

Target Back to College Registry

Now with all these amazing linens he will need to know how to care for them.

Laundry Cheat Sheet for Your College-Bound Graduate by Cindy Hopper for Alphamom.com

So I made him a little Laundry Cheat Sheet. He can keep this handy while at college to know exactly how to care for all of his bedding, towels and clothes as well.

I am sharing this little cheat sheet with you, too.   Know a graduate that will need this when s/he leaves home soon?  Just download a copy of my Laundry Cheat Sheet and print to share with him or her.

Laundry Cheat Sheet for Your College-Bound Graduate by Cindy Hopper for Alphamom.com

My son is heading out of state for college. He is ready for an adventure and to give life a go on his own. I love his willingness to step out there and take on this opportunity. It does bring me peace of mind to know that I can send him off with everything he needs to be comfortable away from home. I will also be able to check in on his registry list from time to time and send a care package to him. How fun is that?

So if you are looking for the perfect graduation gift, first see if your favorite grad has filled out a college registry list at Target. I love giving gifts I know the recipients need and want (and have been blessed by his/her parents, too).

I think this oven mitt filled with fun gadgets is just that.  It doesn’t need to be just kitchen gadgets. How about one filled with needed school supplies.

Earth Hour Candle Craft http://alphamom.com/family-fun/crafts/candle-craft-earth-hour/ http://alphamom.com/family-fun/crafts/candle-craft-earth-hour/#comments Thu, 26 Mar 2015 14:07:52 +0000 http://alphamom.com/?p=36298

On Saturday evening, March 28th, we celebrate Earth Hour by turning off the lights for one hour starting at 8:30 pm local time until 9:30pm. You can show your commitment to our planet by joining in this annual celebration. Here is a fun little candle craft so you will be ready when the lights go out!

Earth Day Candle Craft by Cindy Hopper for Alphamom.com

This clever little process transfers a drawing onto a candle.

Supplies needed for this candle craft:

wax paper
hair dryer
candle
white tissue paper
scissors
markers
glove

Earth Day Candle Craft by Cindy Hopper for Alphamom.com

Directions for this Candle Craft:

Step One: First, cut a piece of white tissue paper the width of your candle and just long enough for ends to meet when wrapped around the candle.

Earth Day Candle Craft by Cindy Hopper for Alphamom.com

Step Two: Carefully draw on the tissue paper with markers. Make the drawing colorful!

Earth Day Candle Craft by Cindy Hopper for Alphamom.com

Step Three: Cut a piece of wax paper that fits around the candle. Allow some extra to serve as a handle.  First wrap the colored tissue paper around the candle. Next wrap the wax paper over the tissue paper. Hold with the extra wax paper. Use a hair dryer on hot to slightly melt the tissue paper into the candle.  It gets hot so it helps to wear a glove to protect your fingers. You will see a slight gloss and color change. Don’t let the candle get wet and drippy. Just heat it enough to attach the tissue paper. Give it a try on a small area and you will get the hang of it.

Earth Day Candle Craft by Cindy Hopper for Alphamom.com

Step Four: Once you are finished remove wax paper and  you have an amazing candle to celebrate Earth Hour.

Earth Day Candle Craft by Cindy Hopper for Alphamom.com

Don’t forget to put it into a candle holder to make it safe!

Your children will enjoy making them for friends as small and thoughtful gifts! Or stocking stuffers for siblings.  They are sure to be a hit with Frozen fans!

Chocolate Snowflake Pencil Toppers by Cindy Hopper for Alphamom.com

Supplies for Chocolate Snowflake Pencil Toppers

1) Chocolate mold with space for plastic pencil pop

2) pencil pops

3) Holiday pencils

4) white candy coating (1 pound makes about 12 suckers)

5) plastic bags

6) twist ties

Chocolate Snowflake Pencil Toppers by Cindy Hopper for Alphamom.com

How to make Chocolate Snowflake Pencil Toppers

Place half the chocolate in a microwave safe bowl. Melt candy 15 seconds at a time, stirring every 15 seconds. It is very important to melt the candy coating slowly. Doing this helps the candy release from the mold and have a glossy finish once hard.

Chocolate Snowflake Pencil Toppers by Cindy Hopper for Alphamom.com

Place plastic pencil pops in mold.

Chocolate Snowflake Pencil Toppers by Cindy Hopper for Alphamom.com

Fill the molds with the candy coating.  Tap the mold to release air bubbles.

Chocolate Snowflake Pencil Toppers by Cindy Hopper for Alphamom.com

Place filled mold in the freezer for about 10 minutes. Once completely cooled candy should come easily out of molds.

Chocolate Snowflake Pencil Toppers by Cindy Hopper for Alphamom.com

Add a pencil and you have a darling snowflake sucker!

Chocolate Snowflake Pencil Toppers by Cindy Hopper for Alphamom.com

Make them easy to gift by placing a sucker bag over the snowflake and fasten with a twist tie.
