Interested in volunteering your time to help families in need? Find out how Quaker Oats is sponsoring people to do just that with their "Go Projects."

How cool is this? Guess what we are doing?
Okay, I’ll fill you in. We are making oatmeal smoothies at Quaker Oats’ Go Humans Go event. That’s right. That’s a BLENDER BIKE. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. And, it was a workout.
If you’re new here, I’m the second one on the left, wearing the colorful scarf and yellow wellies. To my left is Joanna of MyMomShops and to my right is Brian of Looky, Daddy! To his right is Anna of Mommy Poppins.
Along with AskMoxie, Emily of The Motherhood, and Danielle of Foodmomiac we met at Times Square where Art Smith (Oprah & the Obama’s favorite chef) was serving free Quaker Oatmeal breakfast to New Yorkers.

After we were filled with yummy hot oatmeal, we moved on to the main event, our trip to the NYC Food Bank (which Quaker Oats organized for us) where as a group we volunteered our time by sorting and packaging food for needy New Yorkers. The food bank at which we volunteered is the LARGEST in the nation.

The NYC Food Bank was so happy to have food there for us to pack. They told us that since the summer there have been periods where they need to SEND VOLUNTEERS HOME because they don’t have enough donated food to organize.

Looky, Daddy! is definitely someone you want on your team when volunteering. He was so fast and furious that I couldn’t get one non-blurry photo of him. Go Human Go!
During the hour or so that we were at the NYC Food Bank, we sorted and packaged 1,155 lbs. of food or the the equivalent of 888 meals. AND an additional 2,500 meals were donated in our names for our volunteer time and effort. Go Humans Go!
As I live-tweeted the day, I was so encouraged by all my Twitter friends rooting me and the blogger volunteer team on. Bloggers around the country asking how they too could get involved.
And, that is the point of Quaker’s new campaign. Quaker has launched the Go Project, a movement that asks people to fuel up and “power their potential,” and join Quaker and the Share Our Strength organization to fight childhood hunger in their communities.
I hosted the NYC Go Gathering which is the first of a dozen blogger Go Gatherings that will occur nationwide as bloggers with their friends and family volunteer for Share Our Strength at their local food banks and pantries.
Humans, volunteer your time. It does a mind, body and spirit good. Yours and others.
Here are a couple of the cool things Quaker is doing:
* Quaker is committed to donating up to 1 million servings of Quaker products made with whole-grain oats to Share our Strength to help provide nourishment and feed hungry families across the country. All you need is the 12-digit UPC number under the barcode on any Quaker Oats, Quaker Instant Oatmeal, Quaker Oatmeal Squares, Quaker Life or Quaker Chewy package. Click here to enter a UPC.
* You could bring your own hunger relief idea to life in your local community. Each month Quaker will award 20 Go Grants of $500 so people like you can develop community projects to help combat hunger. Submit an application here.

Throughout the United States there are statues of iconic TV sitcom characters waiting to be discovered by you and your family. Guess which ones are out there and where.

Do you happen to live in one of the cities where an iconic TV character is memorialized in a landmark? Are you wondering what the heck we’re talking about here?
TV Land, that fabulous television network that plays reruns of some our greatest American classic sitcoms and other TV classics has been placing statues throughout the United States honoring our favorite fictitious characters. Take a look at some great photographs we found:
The Mary Tyler Moore Statue

We squealed when we saw this. Yes, we did. This statue is found in Minneapolis, Minnesota. You know, home to Mary.

The Andy Griffith Statue

This statue pulls at our heart like no other. Andy and Opie goin’ fishin’ just warms us over. This sculpture can be found in Raleigh, North Carolina. Now get goin’ if you live nearby and haven’t visited yet.

The Ralph Kramden Statue

This fella is appropriately located outside the Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York City. What a great treat for visitors. He is the first of the TV Land statues and was unveiled in August of 2000.
Other TV Land sculptures include:
* The Bob Newhart Statue in Chicago
* The Elvis Statue in Honolulu
* The Bewitched Statue in Salem, MA
* The Fonzie Statue in Milwaukee (the most recent unveiling)
We hope this economic downturn doesn’t put the kibosh on the roll-out of new landmarks. But, if they do, who can blame them really?
TV Land, if you’re listening, we’d love to see a Laura Ingalls from Little House on the Prairie, JJ from Good Times or an Addams Family statue next, just sayin’.
Dear readers, how about you? What statue would you like to see unveiled next?

Spring may be around the corner. Or, maybe not given yesterday's snow storm on the East Coast. BUT, with this innovation on hand you'll be covered for FUN in every season.

You read correctly, the Slicer is an all-season sled. Talk about awesome innovation.

For snow sledding, the Slicer works like any normal sled. But to slide down grass covered slopes, just the opposite is done. The Slicer comes with two detachable ice packs that form thick ice blocks that you insert at the bottom of the sled. As those ice blocks melt… zoom you go!

Yes, Spring may be around the corner. But even if you invest now (hello snow storm last weekend!), you can still use this sled in the height of summer. Whee!
It’s no secret that Design Mom is one of our mama heroes.
Last year she took her family of five kids on a day trip to visit The Crayola Factory in eastern Pennsylvania.
What a fabulous idea!
Kids are always how is this or that made? Whereas it is wonderful to keep some things a secret, it is also awesome to know that factories that make really cool stuff are open to the public.
Here is a list of other interesting Factory Tours for Kids:
* Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory (San Francisco, CA)
* Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream Factory (Waterbury, Vermont)
* Cape Cod Potato Chips Factory (Hyannis, MA)
* Tom’s of Maine Factory (Kennebunk, ME)
* Vermont Teddy Bear Factory (Shelburne, Vermont)
* U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing where they print cold hard cash (Washington DC & Fort Worth, TX)
* Hershey’s Chocolate Factory (Hershey, PA)
If you can’t make it just yet to these factories and your kids just gotta know how to make deodorant, most of these companies have online factory tours. Also, check out this great go-to page on PBS Kids with videos direct from fun factories.
Also, what do you think? Have you visited an oh-so-awesome factory that you want to recommend? Spill it.
Tomorrow, February 24, 2009 is Pancake Day, aka Shrove Tuesday, Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday.
The genesis of Pancake Day, lies in the history of Shrove Tuesday (a phrase no longer commonly used in the US) which is the day before Lent. According to the BBC:

According to Christian beliefs, Lent commemorates Jesus’ 40 days in the wilderness, and observant Christians mark this period by fasting. So Shrove Tuesday was cleverly invented to use up the ingredients that were given up for Lent – milk, butter and, particularly, eggs – which may not be eaten again until Easter.

In honor of Pancake Day, every year we love to remind our readers of IHOP’s special celebration. From 7am until 10pm, they give customers a FREE short stack of their buttermilk pancakes.

In exchange, all IHOP asks is that customers consider making a donation to support local children’s hospitals through Children’s Miracle Network, or other local charities. Last year, customers helped IHOP raise $875,000, and this year their goal is $1 million.
We’ve been checking in with one of our most inspirational mama writers on the web, Josyln of Simple Lovely. And, looky here, since she’s been on her shopping hiatus, Joslyn’s been getting extra creative on her weekend outings. Lucky us! That means more inspiration.

Josyln and her daughters recently went on a pilgrimage to the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame in Ft. Worth, Texas. Which got us thinking….
What a great activity! That is, to visit unique, interesting or offbeat museums not too far from your home.
Here’s a list of some other unusual museums to visit. Please do contribute your own museum suggestions in the comments section and include the city in which the museum resides. Thanks!
Last month, we told you about the Dear Mr. President project launched by kidthing and the National Education Association (NEA).
For several weeks kidthing collected 4,500 submissions representing 47 states and three continents from children (ages 5 to 12) interested in sharing their thoughts and ideas with newly inaugurated President Barack Obama.

Today, fittingly on President’s Day, a special digital book with the top 150 submissions is being unveiled and released free for download on kidthing.
Also, this digital book is being turned into a special hand-bound limited edition print of “Dear Mr. President,” which will be hand delivered to the White House. Awesome!

The project provides an incredible snapshot into the current social narrative of America The kids’ letters shared concerns about the environment, the economy and their hopes for our world.

A couple of favorites include:
“My Dad is laid off, and we really do not want to move. So can you help Michigan find more jobs? My other idea was maybe we can find away to use garbage to power things; maybe even cars and electricity. So you know I am just a kid, but I am the next generation and my ideas might work. So think about it.” — Zachary, Age 10, Michigan
“Dear Mr. Obama, Please make it rain candy!” — Aaron, California, Age 6

What is kidthing? It’s like iTunes for kids. Created by parents, kidthing provides a safe haven for kids to play and learn away from Web browsers and ads. The kidthing store is filled with digital animated books, interactive games, activities and videos from some of the world’s leading brands. Parents can preview and buy products with prices starting at under a dollar. (kidthing also provides some free content for parents.) Once purchased, content is automatically downloaded to the kidthing player and can be viewed anytime and anywhere–without needing to be connected to the Internet.

This post is sponsored by Hyland’s Homeopathic
Did you notice that this winter season it seems like every week or so another child in your world was suffering from an ear infection? Yeah, us too. Poor babies.
Luckily for us it didn’t strike my house. However, I did have handy Hyland’s Earache Drops for rapid relief of the painful onset of earaches. You know, just in case it hit us in the middle of the night.
We asked some mamas to keep Hyland’s Earache Drops on hand to use and review when (and if) they needed it. Many moms are familiar and love the Hyland’s Homeopathic brand, having used their teething tablets with great success. They were open to trying this all-natural and pediatrician-approved earache reliever.
Here’s what they had to say.

Linsey of Lille Punkin’ Reviews:
Since we live miles away from a doctor, I like to give me kids a natural treatment FIRST — before taking them in for an often unnecessary antibiotic prescription. The Hyland’s Earache Tablets are tiny, easy to take, and dissolve instantly. They are natural, won’t interact with other medications, and won’t cause nasty side effects (like drowsiness, hyperactivity, or stomach aches.)
In both of the cases where I used Hyland’s at the first sign of an earache, my children were feeling much better within the first day (and I didn’t need to take them into the doctor.)

SusieJ/Reviews writes:
My favorite pediatrician, the nationally acclaimed Dr. Sears (who wrote the “Manual on Babies and Toddlers”) says that Hyland’s Earache Drops are clinically proven to reduce earache symptoms in the first 48 hours of the symptoms.
My son, who was just recovering from a two-week persistent cough, complained about an earache, of course at 11 p.m. I put four drops of Hyland’s Earache Drops in his ear. The next morning, the pain was gone, but his ear felt “clogged.” I called his pediatrician, and told her I had given him the Hyland’s Ear Ache Drops, which she said was the best thing I could have done. For the “water” in his ear, she suggested that he take a children’s decongestant. I waited a day, and soon, the ear cleared up without the decongestant.

Kristen of Motherhood Uncensored writes:
I’m all for trying to avoid antibiotics unless they’re absolutely necessary.
I applied [the ear drops], [and] I did see a complete difference in her demeanor, which I totally attribute to Hyland’s earache drops and lollipops. But mostly to the drops. I think.
In my research, I found that over 80% of earaches will heal on their own within 4-7 days. And antibiotics don’t work well for middle ear effusion (which is probably what she has – no infection, just fluid). So a product like Hyland’s can do wonders for helping your kids make it through what could have been a long hard week of your kid being hopped up on Motrin and Tylenol. Don’t get me wrong. I use them too. But a natural option is always my first choice.

The Green Parent writes:
I was able to try out, and can now whole-heartedly endorse, a new remedy for my daughters’ earaches…Hyland’s Earache Drops. I’ve been a fan of Hyland’s homeopathic remedies for years, starting with their teething pills when my eldest was a baby and more recently with their motion sickness tablets (let’s just say I’m a fair weather sailor and leave it at that.)
I was so impressed with how quickly and effectively their earache drops worked. And the fact that they are homeopathic, and don’t contain any harsh chemicals is a big plus for me.

Alyson at Three P’s in a Pod:
I am not a true granola, crunchy mama. I love our Pediatrician and follow his guidance 98% of the time without issue. He is very conservative though and has trained me to hold off on the antibiotics whenever possible and he is more than happy to have me use homeopathic treatments such as earache drops. I just make sure I always tell him so that he can be aware and monitor any drug interaction between them. In my opinion, that is the safe thing to do.:)

Amy at Cheeky Monkey Play
So I am the mom who never gave my kids any teething medicine and really never gives out Tylenol without a high fever. I like to keep it pretty natural and not give put OTC, but I realized that every time my kids have had earaches and go to the doctor they get antibiotics. Every single time.
I used the drops on the whole family and although I did take my son to the doctor that week he did not have to go on antibiotics! ( a first!!!!)

Yay for Hyland’s! Moms really love you.

That's right! A poll shows that the vast majority of women would nurse another woman's child who was in need.

By now I am sure you all have seen the headlines about Salma Hayek breastfeeding a starving baby on her UNICEF mission to Sierra Leone.
I first read a mention of it in an article in USA Today detailing Salma’s trip as ambassador for the UNICEF/ Pampers’ One Pack = One Vaccine Campaign:

“The baby was perfectly healthy, but the mother didn’t have milk. He was very hungry. I was weaning Valentina, but I still had a lot of milk that I was pumping, so I breast-fed the baby,” she says, her voice dropping. “You should have seen his eyes. When he felt the nourishment, he immediately stopped crying.”

This was just one brief mention in a feature article that was 19 paragraphs long. I had to re-read it to make sure that I read correctly. NOT because I doubted that Salma would breastfeed a needy child, but, rather I was surprised that USA Today was not making the cross-nursing a focus of the feature article itself.
Kudos to USA Today, for just mentioning this casually and dropping this information as naturally as it should be. Really, just like most nursing moms would stop to nurse a child in need.
Ultimately, what Salma did should not be seen as a big deal. But, it is a big deal because Salma is, well, Salma. She’s a celebrity who’s every move is followed by the watchful paparazzi and millions more around the globe.
Personally, I had the opportunity to ask Salma about her breastfeeding this starving infant more than a week ago when I interviewed her at UNICEF. I chose not, because I just didn’t want to “make it into a thing” when really it SHOULD NOT be “a thing!”
However, I mention it NOW, because my brilliant friends at Celebrity Baby Blog are conducting a poll (still ongoing) and the results are honestly mind-blowingly surprising (in the best possible of ways)!
The question is “Would you or have you ever nursed another woman’s child who was in need?” Over 6,100 women have responded and 78% responded with “Yes, they would” and 4% with “Yes, they have.”
The results of this poll are a BIG DEAL. This is amazing.
If you have no idea what I have been writing about. Here is the footage of Salma on her UNICEF trip to Sierra Leone.
